KML files for the route of Phase 2a of the proposed HS2

This website is no longer being maintained. An important change is that in 2023, the Government cancelled the section of HS2 between Handsacre (near Lichfield) and Manchester. Although the mapping given on this website is likely to be accurate in many places, elsewhere there will have been changes to the route. And the formation ("is it a cutting, a tunnel, an embankment, ...") may have changed.

I have obtained an ESRI shape file from the Department of Transport. This file provides details of the preferred route for the Phase 2a of the proposed HS2. This is for the route from the West Midlands to Crewe. This file has been released with the Open Government Licence. It was released on January 7th 2016.

I've converted some aspects of this shape file to KML.

Arguably, the most useful KML file I've derived from the ESRI shape files is one that can be used to display a multi-coloured line whose colours indicate the formation of each section of the route. The following colours are used for the formation: red:cutting; black:tunnel; green:green tunnel (meaning "a cut and cover tunnel"); blue:viaduct; magenta:at grade (meaning "level with nearby land") and yellow:embankment.

I've also produced a KML file that can be used to display the route in a single colour. It has no data about formation.

The following KML file was also derived from the ESRI shape file. However, for this KML file I've done no tampering of the information:

You can use any of these KML files with Google Earth.
